Course review:

"An understanding of animals as sentient beings with interests of their own has been increasingly a target of research. The use of animals for human purposes and the suffering humans are causing them is of great concern worldwide. Their exploitation is undeniably cruel and unsustainable from many points of view.

Animal Law is a new field of law striving to clarify the legal aspects of the protection of animals, including the view of animals as holders of rights.

Congratulations to all involved at Animal Voice Academy for making the course Human Ethics and Animal Rights a reality. It is making history for all animals. Giving them rights does not take anything away from humans. On the contrary."

Human Ethics and Animal Rights – a course for social workers and social auxiliary workers (submitted for accreditation and CPD points)

The online course, Human Ethics and Animal Rights, published by the Animal Voice Academy, reflects our modern understanding of the relationship between ourselves and animals.

Specially designed, in this instance, for professionals in the Social Services, this course includes a specific focus on The Link between Animal Abuse and Human Violence, examining the connections between:

  • animal abuse and child abuse
  • animal abuse and domestic violence

Empathy erosion is considered by social scientists to be at the root of the escalating levels of violence we witness in the world today. This course identifies the causes of empathy erosion and how to rebuild empathy into our daily lives.

As professionals whose work often involves contact with those who have been abused as well as the abusers themselves, this course will be of particular interest to child protection personnel, welfare workers, community health workers, law enforcement personnel and animal protection officers, providing a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play to the benefit of families, communities and society at large.

Human Ethics and Animal Rights – a course for teachers in Life Skills and Life Orientation (Grades R – 12) (submitted for accreditation and CPTD points)

The online course, Human Ethics and Animal Rights, published by the Animal Voice Academy, reflects our modern understanding of the relationship between ourselves and animals.

Specially designed for teachers, this course brings a comprehensive  understanding to:

  • The link between animal abuse and child abuse
  • The link between animal abuse and domestic violence
  • The erosion of empathy and its connection with bullying and gangster-ism
  • How the building blocks of empathy are central to our learning experience
  • Why a full bench of Constitution Court judges point out that ‘animal protection safeguards the moral status of humans and the degeneration of human values’

As professionals whose work often involves dealing with bullying, aggression, rudeness and violence, this course provides teachers with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. The course further empowers teachers to bring about a change in mind-set in the classroom, to the benefit of society at large.

Unhappiness in the workplace drains a business of its potential.

In contrast, happiness in the workplace maximises human potential. It optimises…

  • co-operation
  • teamwork
  • motivation
  • innovation
  • quality of work
  • service delivery
  • loyalty
  • and yields a competitive edge.

Research shows that the root of happiness in the workplace is the presence of empathy within its structures and practices. Where empathy is present, colleagues and staff feel…

  • meaningfully involved in their work
  • valued
  • heard
  • acknowledged
  • respected

Yet, empathy erosion is a critical issue of our time. Absence of empathy results in colleagues and staff feeling undervalued as individuals, taken for granted as mere units of production, and demotivated.

This course is about understanding the holistic nature of authentic empathy and its vital role in developing, revitalising and optimising staff potential within the working environment.

The Teacher’s Guide is divided into four separate modules according to Phase. All four are aligned with the CAPS curriculum and contain topics, activities and assessments as identified by grade and term where relevant to animal welfare.

Animal welfare is a global issue that requires action in terms of legislation, education and awareness. The modules are grounded in the philosophy of the Five Freedoms as endorsed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (2012).

The pedagogic approach throughout is that of introducing animal welfare issues in order that the learners can participate in discussions which involves them in creating a kinder more compassionate society. This in turn enhances their understanding of social and personal responsibility.

  • Animals have intrinsic value as individuals
  • Animals are sentient beings capable of suffering and experiencing pain
  • Animal protection safeguards the moral status of humans and the degeneration of human values
