The world now acknowledges that we can only make true progress towards ensuring a sustainable future if we accept our obligation, individually and collectively, to respect the earth and all its inhabitants.

This course is intended for veterinary and paraveterinary professionals who wish to understand the issues involved in our treatment of nonhumans and thus be empowered to make a difference.

Course review:

"An understanding of animals as sentient beings with interests of their own has been increasingly a target of research. The use of animals for human purposes and the suffering humans are causing them is of great concern worldwide. Their exploitation is undeniably cruel and unsustainable from many points of view.

Animal Law is a new field of law striving to clarify the legal aspects of the protection of animals, including the view of animals as holders of rights.

Congratulations to all involved at Animal Voice Academy for making the course Human Ethics and Animal Rights a reality. It is making history for all animals. Giving them rights does not take anything away from humans. On the contrary."

The Teacher’s Guide is divided into four separate modules according to Phase. All four are aligned with the CAPS curriculum and contain topics, activities and assessments as identified by grade and term where relevant to animal welfare.

Animal welfare is a global issue that requires action in terms of legislation, education and awareness. The modules are grounded in the philosophy of the Five Freedoms as endorsed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (2012).

The pedagogic approach throughout is that of introducing animal welfare issues in order that the learners can participate in discussions which involves them in creating a kinder more compassionate society. This in turn enhances their understanding of social and personal responsibility.

  • Animals have intrinsic value as individuals
  • Animals are sentient beings capable of suffering and experiencing pain
  • Animal protection safeguards the moral status of humans and the degeneration of human values

 – Justice Sisi Khampepe, Constitutional Court, 8 December 2016
